HMS Egret, an anti-aircraft escort
vessel, shepherds a convoy bound for the UK. In August 1943 the
Egret had the unfortunate distinction to be the first warship
sunk by a guided missile. The wire-guided, Henschel Hs-293A rocket-propelled
device, launched from an attacking Luftwaffe Dornier bomber, was
the latest deadly weapon in Hitler's arsenal. The original oil painting
was commissioned in honour of the lost crew of HMS Egret.
