HMS Warspite at Narvik
BATTLESHIP HMS WARSPITE AT NARVIK

On April 13 1940 HMS Warspite made her journey to the German-held Norwegian iron-ore port of Narvik with her escorting destroyers. A German destroyer force was already trapped in the fjord as the Royal Navy commenced the attack, with snow flurries swirling off the steep sides of the fjords. Visibility was down to about 10 miles, with low cloud, but despite this the battleship's Swordfish floatplane was launched to scout ahead. The painting shows Warspite's big guns, with their awesome sound reverberating from the fjord sides, firing at the fleeing Germans.
